Botox Bruising: What’s Normal and What’s a Red Flag
You get Botox expecting smoother, more youthful skin, a purple souvenir. If you notice bruising after your injections, don’t panic!
Bruising is a very common, and thankfully minor, side effect.
Here’s what you need to know about Botox bruising and when it may be a red flag.
What Does Normal Botox Bruising Look Like?
A little discoloration around the injection sites is usually nothing to worry about. After treatment you may see small red spots that gradually turn purple, blue, or even yellow as the bruise heals.
The area may also be slightly tender to the touch.
Even though Botox needles are extremely fine, it still has to pass through the skin where plenty of small blood vessels are located. Occasionally, the needle nicks one, which can cause a bruise.
When to Be Concerned About Bruising After Botox
Paying attention to your symptoms is extremely important.
A small bruise that gradually changes color and fades is totally normal. But, you should contact one of our injectors if you develop:
- significant or worsening swelling
- warmth
- severe pain
- spreading redness
- drainage
If something doesn’t seem right, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our team is here to answer any questions you have and to ease your worries.
Tips for Minimizing Bruising
There are some simple things you can do to help lower the risk of Botox bruising.
Start by avoiding alcohol for about 48 hours before your appointment. After, be gentle with the treatment area and follow all of the aftercare instructions we provide.
This includes keeping your head elevated and avoiding strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours.

A bruise after Botox doesn’t mean that something went wrong! The fact is that Botox is a safe, non-effective treatment for softening facial wrinkles.
